Organization Configuration
Backup Accounts / Backup Applications
When handling a lot of SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business backups you might encounter the Microsoft 365 throttling mechanism. To counter this mechanism, which works on a per user basis, you can configure multiple backup accounts in Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 which are used to backup the data.
If you encounter throttling, start adding 8 accounts per proxy for the organization and increase by increments of 8 until throttling is minimized or disappears completely.
To help creating and adding accounts have a look at the blog of Niels Engelen who created a PowerShell scrip to automate adding backup accounts
When using modern-only authentication you are using “Backup Applications” instead - it’s the same principle but instead of multiple users Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 uses multiple applications (AppIDs). New backup applications can be easily added via the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 GUI but this is not supported by Microsoft as a solution to overcome being throttled. As a result we suggest to start with just a few backup applications and monitor the level of throttling to find the right balance between getting throttled and backup performance.
