Azure Integration with VBR

Update / Upgrade

Please consider that, after the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance is added to the Veeam Backup & Replication console, any upgrade to the appliance must be done from the Veeam Backup & Replication console, no matter how the appliance was deployed. Please see Veeam Help Center for upgrade instructions for details.

Minor updates for OS and packages need to be done through the Appliance web UI updater.

Appliance and Worker updates

To be able to update OS and packages of the Appliance and Workers, outbound internet access must be available.
Details can be found on the ports page of the documentation.

If a worker can not reach the online update resources, it will fail during deployment and the backup will not be performed. It is recommended to permit the download of updates and patches, but if outbound internet access is not available you can raise a support case to get assistance on disabling the update behaviour.

These are the URLs required to be reachable:

Appliance

  • Veeam Update Repository (repository.veeam.com, cloudfront.net, amazonaws.com)
  • Ubuntu Security Repository (security.ubuntu.com)
  • Ubuntu Archive Repository (archive.ubuntu.com)
  • PostgreSQL APT repository (apt.postgresql.org)
  • PostgreSQL Website to download the PostgreSQL Apt Repository key (postgresql.org)
  • Microsoft Package Repository (packages.microsoft.com)
  • nginx web server website (nginx.org)

Worker

Workers are checking for updates everytime they get deployed.

  • Ubuntu Security Repository (security.ubuntu.com)
  • Ubuntu Archive Repository (archive.ubuntu.com)
  • PostgreSQL APT repository (apt.postgresql.org)
  • PostgreSQL Website to download the PostgreSQL Apt Repository key (postgresql.org)

Configuration Backup and Restore

It is a best practice that you periodically perform a configuration backup of any Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance you have deployed. The Configuration Backup can be performed directly in the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure web UI, but when the appliance is being managed by Veeam Backup & Replication using Microsoft Azure Plug-in, this option is disabled from the web UI and the whole Configuration Backup and Restore process can be managed ONLY from the Veeam Backup & Replication console. Since with v7.x or newer the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure Appliance needs to be managed by Veeam Backup & Replication, the later is most likely the case.
