Microsoft Azure Integration with VBR
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure architecture
A full architectural overview for the integration between Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure can be found in the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure Guide
Microsoft Azure Service Account permissions
When using the Microsoft Azure Plug-in to integrate Veeam Backup & Replication with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, you can either
- Deploy a new or upgrade an existing Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance
- Connect to an existing one (up to v6 deployed from Microsoft Azure Marketplace)
In case you decide to deploy a new appliance using Veeam Backup & Replication and the Microsoft Azure Plug-in, you will need a Microsoft Azure Service Account to connect with Microsoft Azure and deploy the appliance.
For convenience, the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure Appliance wizard can create the Service Account automatically. In some environments this is not a preferred method because the data protection teams might not have the permissions to do so. In such a case the recommendation is to create a Microsoft Azure Service Account manually with the minimum privileges required by Veeam in order to follow the least-privilege principle.
See the Veeam Helpcenter for the required privileges.
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance sizing
To prevent issues, follow the sizing recommendations for Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance available in the Veeam Backup for Public Cloud Solutions Best Practice Guide.
NOTE: It’s important to highlight that the size of the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliance can be changed in the Microsoft Azure Portal any time after being deployed, but during the process the appliance itself must be powered-off.
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure workers sizing
Sizing recommendations for Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure workers can be found in the Veeam Backup for Public Cloud Solutions Best Practice Guide.
It’s important to highlight that the size of Workers deployed during backup, restore and retention operations will have an impact on the throughput.
The Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure Appliance will automatically orchestrate the required size of a Worker to protect a certain workload, based on the defined worker profiles for each region.
It is recommended to predefine custom profiles for each region with enough worker resources to reflecting the source workload requirements.
Integrating Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure
You can connect multiple Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure appliances to a single Veeam Backup server, but make sure the Veeam Backup server has enough resources.
