Application-Consistent Backup and Restore
The biggest differentiator between a dedicated and a shared environment is security. A general assumption is network isolation between management and tenant networks. That brings additional concerns for application-aware protection.
Guest interaction proxy (GIP) must have a VIX connection to the VM that will be processed. A direct network connection is not required.
Backup using a GIP brings the VM into a consistent state, however it is not used during restore process. As an outcome:
- File-level restore is done by the Mount Server through a VIX API connection.
- Restore of Application items is not possible due to the fact that generally no direct network connection is in place between the backup environment and the tenant environment.
