Application-Consistent Backup and Restore

The biggest differentiator between a dedicated and a shared environment is security. A general assumption is network isolation between management and tenant networks. That brings additional concerns for application-aware protection.

Guest interaction proxy (GIP) must have a VIX connection to the VM that will be processed. A direct network connection is not required.

Backup using a GIP brings the VM into a consistent state, however it is not used during restore process. As an outcome:

  1. File-level restore is done by the Mount Server through a VIX API connection.
  2. Restore of Application items is not possible due to the fact that generally no direct network connection is in place between the backup environment and the tenant environment.
