File- and Item-Level Restores
File-Level Restore (FLR)
File-Level Restore (FLR) in VBR uses the VMware VIX API for recovery without requiring a direct network connection (when a virtual machine (VM) can’t be reached through the network). Unfortunately the VIX method (by design) can be quite slow when it comes to file restoration onto a tenant’s VM.
Recommended alternative methods to consider when restoring large amounts of data are:
-
Web Portal File Download
Enable access to the Self-service Backup Portal. Tenants can sign in to the portal directly from their VM and download the needed files to their machine. -
Virtual Disk Mapping
Enable access to the Self-service Backup Portal. Tenants can sign in, use Virtual Disk Restore to linking the backup disks to the VM, and then retrieve the files directly on the VM. -
Staging Server Access
The service provider can mount the backup onto a staging server to which the tenant has access rights. For efficient data exposure and file recovery, the Veeam Data Integration API can be used. More details can be found in the Veeam Data Integration API Documentation. -
Instant Disk Recovery
The service provider executes an Instant Disk Recovery back to the same or staging server, making the virtual disk immediately available without a full restore. After the tenant completes file restoration, the provider can dismantle the operation and unmount the virtual disk. -
Deploy a Staging Server with VBR: The service provider (SP) can deploy a staging server into a customer’s network with a full installation of Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) and provide access to repository. This configuration allows the customer to access Veeam Explorer for Active Directory (AD) and SQL.
